AIAA Design, Build, and Fly Competition

Date: Fall 2010, Spring 2011
Disciplines: Aeronautics, Unmanned Systems
Technologies Used: SolidWorks
Team: Team led by Hao Chen. See report for full team.
Description:

The annual AIAA DBF competition, sponsored by Ratheon and Cessna, challenges students to design build and fly remote control UAVs. The year I particapated in the competition, the goal was to build a small multipurpose UAV that could deliver simulated medical supplies (high volume, low mass - golf balls) and simulated ammunition (low volume, high mass - metal bars). We successfully built three UAVs although testing was not particularly kind as we lost many in the process in crashes. However, we learned and improved on each iteration. We placed roughly 50th percentile overall just based on our report. I'm happy to say that after my freshman year in 2010-2011, as I've led the AIAA, we have had teams particapate in the competition every year, doing better and better! See below for the report from the year I competed in.
