RASC-AL RoboOps

Date: Fall 2012, Spring 2013
Disciplines: Robotics, Embedded Systems, Space Systems
Technologies Used: SolidWorks, Arduino, ROS
Team: about a dozen undergrads, created/led by me, then led by Peter Kim
Description:

One of the problems our club always faced was a lack of funding. While working at NASA JPL, I learned of a NASA-sponsored rover competition in which teams submitted proposals and 8 winning teams received $10k to build their rover and go to the Johnson Space Center to compete. I created a Berkeley competition team and led the team in the competition. During the last couple months of the semester, I got bogged down in upperdivision EECS coursework, so I left the team in the very capable hands of Peter Kim who led them through the end of the semester while I took up more of an advising role. That year, we didn't place as one of the eight teams, but I'm happy to say that we received lots of good advice from the judges and the following year, the team won the proposal! I'm very proud of the team and it's rewarding to know that this competition team I started at Berkeley now competes every year! There is even a decal class available for credits. Feel free to contact me if you're interested and I'll point you in their direction.
